Setting Concepts:

The Galactic Republic/Senate - is the body of government for most of the galaxy that the Star Wars Franchise takes place in. It is compromised of many Core planets and the capital world is Coruscant. Padmé is the Senator of Naboo, one planet out of thousands represented. Unlike senators of the United State, she was appointed by her planet's queen to her position after her two terms as queen herself were up. Queens (and kings) of Naboo are elected leaders that serve terms of four years with a maximum of two terms. There doesn't appear to be an age limitation, as she was first elected at fourteen and wasn't even the youngest to serve as queen.

The Supreme Chancellor - the elected leader of the Senate that helps to guide Senate meetings and can be given more powers in times of emergencies when swift decisions are needed to ensure that the fate of the Republic is upheld.

She is associated with the Jedi Order through her friendships with Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jinn and Anakin Skywalker, whom she later marries. She has no official business with them, despite knowing many of the members of the Jedi Council through all of the political dealings on the capital planet, Coruscant. She is not a Jedi, nor is she Force sensitive in any way. The Order as she knows it helps to keep the galaxy safe from rogues and those who possess the powers of the elusive Force—a form of life itself, but that those sensitive to it can use as a type of power that would resemble magic to those outside of this galaxy. Only those who have midi chlorians in their blood, microscopic life forms that allow Force sensitivity, are able to use it—so that their homes can enjoy the freedoms they all take for granted with warriors that are trained with strict regimens and required to give up much in their personal lives so that they can remain on the side of "Good".

While her first order of business is to approach everything as a diplomat, she has been known to fight, especially in the face of the Separatists, led by the Sith through the Trade Federation and their allies. They serve as her major conflict both as Queen and Senator of Naboo.
The Sith are the opposing force to the Jedi. They supposedly wield dark, dangerous powers that normal people don't really know about. There are legends that they used to rule the galaxy before the current Republic came into play.

Gungan
- A race of aquatic, amphibian-like aliens that live in the watery depths of Naboo. They had no real interaction with the humans on the planet until the Trade Federation sent down droid armies to ensure complete control of the peoples of Naboo.

Personality: Beautiful, compassionate, brave, strong-willed, loving, forgiving, dutiful, intelligent, humble, decisive—these are all qualities that Padmé has in spades, but they barely scratch the surface of whom she really is. A lot of Padmé’s motivations stem from her upbringing on the pacifist planet of Naboo. At a very young age, she was enrolled in the Legislative Youth Program where she and other children were taught the basics of government for both Naboo and the Republic.

Her humility has allowed all of her positive qualities, coupled with the great duty she feels towards the people of Naboo and the Republic at large, to not go to her head. She was elected as Queen of Naboo at the age of fourteen, not the youngest ruler, but she later states that she felt that she was too young for the position. However, she was so pivotal in her leadership that she was reelected and there was talk of the constitution of Naboo to be amended so that she could stay in her position. Part of this would be the dedication to her people that she made obvious on more than one occasion during her ruling, including the risks she took during the events of The Phantom Menace to free her planet from the grasp of the Trade Federation. Her popularity and dedication were what made the next queen of Naboo call upon her to serve their people in the Senate.

Because of this auspicious start, Padmé almost has two personalities. There is the professionally cool queen and Senator Amidala of Naboo. Then there is the warm, affectionate woman, Padmé. When she is alone with those she can trust, which is an appallingly small number, Padmé smiles and laughs. She teases and flirts almost. She’s open about her background and personal history with Anakin, which is another story altogether.

No matter where she is, her first thought when dealing with people is to treat them like equals. Things like slavery, prejudice for non-humans, classism are truly appalling to her. Her handmaidens and flight crews are as much friends and colleagues as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Bail Organa of Alderaan, and the Gungan Jar Jar Binks. She believes completely and whole-heartedly in democracy and diplomacy and sees equality and freedom as the two highest things that can be reached by any person so long as it doesn’t impinge on the rights of someone else. She is a true child of the Republic.

It’s why when she is finally brought to see the many strangleholds that Palpatine has placed upon the peoples of the Republic that she takes it personally. Through the help of Senators Mon Mothma and Bail Organa, Padmé is inducted into a committee to take a look at the Supreme Chancellor’s behaviours and to check the level of power he’d amassed in the time during the Clone Wars.

While she let duty and her protectiveness of others lead her in her professional life, her personal life was sparse until Anakin Skywalker reappeared. Having met him on the planet of Tatooine as a young boy of nine and a slave, Padmé dismissed his declaration that they would be married as the wishful thinking of a child laying claim to a toy since she was just fourteen herself. Once Qui-Gon Jinn (Obi-Wan Kenobi’s master) freed the boy, Sabé—in her disguise as decoy Amidala—allowed Anakin to stay with her party and Padmé then became good friends with him, keeping him safe as she could during their trip to Coruscant and then back to Naboo. Once her world was free, she didn’t see him again until ten years had passed and she was a woman of twenty-four and serving as Naboo’s Senator and he was Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Padawan.

The attraction between them upon their reunion was instantaneous for both of them, but Padmé’s duty came before even her own safety and heart. When Anakin was appointed as her personal bodyguard back on Naboo after two assassination attempts, she tried to befriend him once more. But the more time they spent together, the more open she became with him and the more she found it difficult to fight her attraction. It culminated in a kiss that she rebuked herself over, telling him it never should have happened and when he brought up the depth of his own feelings, she told him that what he was asking—for them to be together—could never happen. She couldn’t live a lie.

However, when Anakin needed her, she followed him to Tatooine to find his mother and then consoled him upon her death, listening and not judging him for what he did to the tribe of Tuskan Raiders responsible for Shmi Skywalker’s death. And then again when Obi-Wan Kenobi was captured on Geonossa, she was the one who said that they were going to save their friend. When they themselves were captured, she admitted that she was desperately in love with Anakin as well and that even though they were facing death, she wouldn’t take it back. Once they were safe again, she and Anakin were married on Naboo in secret. It's one of the few times where Padmé allows her personal desires to cloud her professional judgment.

Using the pins that held up her elaborate hair, Padme was able to free herself and then climbed the pillar she’d been tied to in order to fight the monster that was attacking the area she’d just been. It’s not the first time she acts bravely, nor is it the last. She was among the fighters in her palace in Theed during the operation to end the occupation by the Trade Federation. When she was thrown from the transport ship during its attack, she got up, dusted herself off, gathered up whatever clones were around and led them on to find more of Dooku’s droids to stop. She also serves as a spy and ambassador in many sticky situations during the Clone Wars, both with and without assistance from the Jedi in her acquaintance and other politicians (most notably being Bail Organa, Senator Satine, and Senator Onaconda Farr of Rhodia).

That is not to say that Padmé was untouched by overwhelming grief. In the last year of her life, she vacillated between extreme joy of her pregnancy with Anakin’s child(ren) and fear of his death during the wartime efforts. Much of her time outside of attending committee meetings and attending the Senate was spent pacing and worrying over her husband and Obi-Wan and how the Republic would fare when all of this was over. Not only that, but she had to worry about Anakin’s growing obsession with trying to keep her safe, to prevent her death during childbirth, and the lengths that he was slowly beginning to go to so that he had peace of mind. During the elimination of the Jedi, Padmé nearly made herself sick with worry while Anakin was gone, only able to breathe once she saw that he was safe.

However, upon learning the truth of Anakin’s Fall from Obi-Wan and following him to Mustafar to see him for herself, Darth Vader literally broke her heart. After being Force Choked by her husband, the father of her children, Padmé’s grief stole her will to live. She survived long enough to give birth to Luke and Leia, name them, and then give Obi-Wan one last plea for Anakin’s life, knowing that he still had good inside of him because she knew her husband better than anyone else.

While the last year of her life seems to be a contrast to the rest so much, it is in fact just a continuation of what Padmé originally set out to do. She still served the people of Naboo to the best of her ability. She tried to keep Palpatine from taking over with the help of other Senators, to maintain the freedoms that they’d enjoyed for over 1000 years. She put her trust in those she loved and cared for, even if it ended up poorly for her, and she knew that in the end their hearts were still good. She didn’t shrink from uncomfortable or scary situations. Instead, she faced them head-on with her stubborn will and a belief that democracy would return to the galaxy because it worked when it was given half a chance.

Appearance: Natalie Portman as Padmé Amidala

Abilities: Padmé is not Force Sensitive, being just a basic human. What skills she has are learned through her early training in the Legislative Youth Program on Naboo, her tenure as Queen of Naboo and then as Senator of said planet. She is smart, quick-witted, fearless, and a good shot with a blaster.

Padmé's natural empathy made going into politics almost a no-brainer when you look at the way her family remained humble and no-nonsense, despite being "worldly" enough to be friends with politicians of other planets, as evidenced by Padmé calling Senator Onaconda Farr of Rodian "Uncle Ono" well into her twenties as senator of Naboo. The family was still close-knit and able to tease one another about normal things when gathered. She used this background to keep her grounded while she interacted with those around her, both with the natives of her planet, human and Gungan alike, and those in the Senate. In fact, the Boss of the Gungans remarked that he liked her because she didn't set herself above him and his people even though she was the queen of the Naboo.

At a young age, Padmé actually dedicated herself to public service, joining the Apprentice Legislators at eight where she eventually became a junior senatorial adviser. Her skills aren't actually gone into a great deal, but her desire to help, coupled with her natural intelligence and persuasive tongue helped to shoot her leagues ahead of the other children around her. When she was fourteen, she was nominated to run against the corrupt and decrepit king at the time. She was elected in a landslide, where she then went on to use all of her natural grace, intelligence and bravery to free her planet in the blockade by the Trade Federation. After this excitement, she continued to put the needs of her people before anything else, making her an extremely popular leader for her two terms and even sparking some talk about amending the constitution of the planet so she could stay in office. Instead, she refused any further terms as queen but continued on as Senator to help Naboo and the rest of the galaxy stay free.

She shot up through the ranks of the Senate with her outspoken and passionate debates about the state of the government, making her the target for the Separatists and other senators alike. However, she didn't let it stop her from doing her job. Her unflappable courage is what made Mon Mothma and Bail Organa approach her for the committee that would later go on to form the solid base of the Rebellion years later.

(Most of this information can be found in the novelization of the movies. However, most of this isn't gone into great detail by Padmé anyone else around her, or the narration.)

[Padmé has seen some things in her life, but never before has she thought that she'd been stopped by machinery. These strange consoles have given her the hardest time and she only wishes to find out if anyone she knows is here. How she longs for the ease of the holos back home. But she does finally get the contraption to work and she smooths the lines around her eyes and face before setting to contacting the other people.]

Greetings, fellow Foreigners. My name is Senator Padmé Amidala. I am aware that the Welcome Center exists and I have been thoroughly educated about my current situation. [And if she could sound any more displeased about it, she would yell. But, proper decorum won't allow her to do so. Not when these people she's addressing aren't responsible. Or she's not pleading a case on the Senate floor.] Some of this sounds fantastical, but I won't sit here and beleaguer you all with how unpleasant I find this whole ordeal.

There are only two things I wish to know that I think you might help me with. Do the names Bail Organa, Anakin Skywalker or Obi-Wan Kenobi sound familiar to anyone? If they do, please contact me.

The second is has anyone seen my protocol droid? He would appear to be a man of golden metal and responds to the name of 3CP0.

Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
